The Heavy Equipment Mechanic Instructor Supervisor oversees and provides hands-on instruction and supervision for personnel engaged in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of heavy construction and industrial equipment. This position combines expert mechanical skills with strong leadership and instructional capability to ensure that maintenance staff and trainees achieve proficiency in diagnosing, repairing, rebuilding, and maintaining heavy power equipment used in defense and field operations.
Requirements:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise and instruct a team of Heavy Equipment Mechanics and trainees in the analysis, repair, rebuilding, and preventive maintenance of heavy vehicles and power equipment.
- Provide classroom and on-the-job training in the operation, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of machinery such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, graders, bulldozers, trenchers, dredges, pumps, compressors, and pneumatic tools.
- Operate and inspect machinery to diagnose defects or mechanical malfunctions; dismantle and reassemble components using hoists, cranes, and standard hand/power tools.
- Examine parts for damage or excessive wear using micrometers, gauges, and other precision measuring tools.
- Replace or rebuild defective engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and other subassemblies.
- Conduct testing and quality assurance inspections of repaired and overhauled equipment to ensure compliance with operational and safety standards.
- Perform and instruct welding, cutting, and fabrication tasks to repair or reinforce structural components.
- Develop training materials, maintenance checklists, and technical procedures in accordance with manufacturer specifications, OSHA standards, and military/DoD requirements.
- Monitor performance and conduct evaluations of assigned personnel and students, ensuring adherence to program standards, timelines, and safety protocols.
- Oversee maintenance shop operations, ensuring cleanliness, tool accountability, and adherence to environmental and safety regulations.
- Provide technical guidance and serve as a subject matter expert in heavy equipment systems and field maintenance practices.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical or vocational training in heavy equipment maintenance preferred.
- Minimum of 810 years of experience as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic, including supervisory or instructional experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy construction and earth-moving equipment.
- Proficiency with hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems, as well as diesel and gasoline engines.
- Skilled in reading and interpreting technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
- Experience with welding, fabrication, and mechanical assembly.
- Ability to instruct and mentor personnel effectively with clear communication and leadership skills.
- Knowledge of applicable safety, environmental, and military/industry regulations.
- Valid driver's license; CDL preferred.
- Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver heavy parts and equipment as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification from a recognized trade or technical institution (ASE, NCCER, or equivalent).
- Prior experience in a military or defense contract environment.
- Familiarity with U.S. Army TM (Technical Manual) and maintenance documentation standards.
- Experience developing and delivering structured training programs.
Work Environment:
- This position involves work in both classroom/shop and field environments.
- Exposure to noise, vibration, moving mechanical parts, and weather conditions may occur.
- Appropriate PPE and adherence to safety procedures are required at all times.
