Position Summary
Chosen Valley Testing is seeking a Special Inspector with a primary focus on wood framing and fire-resistance-related inspections. This position is responsible for verifying compliance with the International Building Code (IBC), approved construction documents, and manufacturer specifications for structural wood systems and fire-rated assemblies.
The ideal candidate has experience inspecting shear walls, diaphragms, anchorage systems, engineered wood products, and fire-resistance-rated wall, floor, and ceiling assemblies, including firestopping systems and life-safety components.
In addition to wood and fire-related inspections, this role may also perform special inspections in other structural disciplines as certified, including structural steel, high-strength bolting, welding, reinforced concrete, and reinforced masonry.
We welcome both experienced, ICC-certified inspectors and motivated construction professionals seeking to grow into certification-backed inspection roles.
Essential Responsibilities
- Perform special inspections in accordance with IBC Chapter 17 requirements
- Inspect structural wood framing systems including:
- Shear walls and diaphragms
- Nailing patterns and fastener installation
- Hold-downs and anchorage systems
- Engineered wood products (LVL, glulam, I-joists, etc.)
- Inspect fire-resistance-rated assemblies, including:
- Rated wall, floor, and ceiling systems
- Fire blocking and draft stopping
- Penetrations and firestopping systems
- Perform additional structural inspections as certified (steel, bolting, welding, concrete, masonry)
- Prepare accurate and timely inspection reports
- Communicate findings clearly with contractors, engineers, and building officials
- Identify non-conforming work and document corrective actions
- Follow company and jobsite safety protocols
Requirements
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to perform field work, including climbing ladders and accessing framing areas
- Willingness to obtain and maintain ICC certifications
Preferred Qualifications (Not Required for Entry-Level Candidates)
- Active ICC certification(s), such as:
- Commercial Building Inspector
- Residential Building Inspector
- Structural Wood Special Inspector
- Fire-Resistant Penetration & Joint Systems
- Spray-Applied Fireproofing
- Prior experience in wood framing, carpentry, building inspection, or special inspections
- Experience with structural steel, reinforced concrete, or masonry inspections
- 2+ years of construction or inspection experience
