Definition: 
The Pool and Ice Maintenance Technician performs skilled maintenance, repair, and replacement of mechanical, chemical, electrical, plumbing, and hardware systems associated with the operation of two indoor natatoriums, one large outdoor community pool, two outdoor activity pools, and one seasonal outdoor ice-skating rink.

The position regularly inspects facilities and equipment, identifies maintenance and repair needs, and performs or coordinates timely corrective and preventive maintenance to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable facility operations.

Principal Duties:
   

• Conduct daily water chemistry and equipment checks at assigned aquatic and ice facilities. 
• Inspect facilities and maintain operation of pumps, motors, filters, computerized electronic controls, plumbing, mechanical equipment and chemical supply systems. Inspect facilities and equipment to identify construction, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and other maintenance needs; document findings and maintain required records.
• Perform preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment including pumps and motors, valves, chlorinators, filtration systems, heating systems, plumbing systems, and ice-resurfacing equipment.  
• In conjunction with the Maintenance Supervisor and members of the Risk Department, conduct routine safety inspections of aquatic and ice facilities and implement necessary changes to maintain compliance with applicable safety standards.
• Prepare outdoor pools and pool buildings for seasonal operation and complete winter shutdown procedures. 
• Assemble, maintain, and dismantle the seasonal ice rink. Train staff and perform regular maintenance of the Zamboni and ice surface.
• Participate in facility maintenance shutdowns, including planning, preparation, and execution of assigned work.
• Diagnose, repair and replace defective operating equipment, including pumps, chlorine feeders, heaters, chemical controllers, and related components. 
• Replace defective tubing, fuses, relays and heating elements; oil and lubricate bearings; and repack or replace equipment seals as necessary.   
• Perform and assist in skilled interior and exterior building maintenance and repair, including carpentry, tile and grout, painting, welding, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, electrical and mechanical work. 
• Instructs staff on the mechanical and chemical operation of equipment to promote safe and proper operations of City pools and the ice rink. 
• Oversee contractors and staff performing facility, construction, and maintenance projects, ensuring safe and effective work practices and compliance with project requirements.
• Coordinate with local and national vendors to order replacement parts, chemicals, fuel, equipment, and other operational supplies.  
• Reconcile monthly Munis purchasing (P-card) transactions associated with facility expense budget lines. 
• Follow all applicable standard safety practices, particularly those related to the handling, storage and use of chemicals. 
• Suggest recommendations for capital improvement projects, equipment upgrades, and essential repairs for facilities.
• Maintain inventory of materials and supplies for mechanical equipment and chemical systems; assist with obtaining price quotations from vendors for routine materials and supplies. 
• Work with supervisor to track maintenance-related costs and monitor assigned budget expenditures.
• Maintain work and storage areas in a clean, neat, organized, and safe manner.  Clearly mark and label materials, equipment, and supplies for easy identification and access. 
• Perform custodial duties, including cleaning building entranceways, and assisting with other janitorial and parks service tasks. 
• Replace light bulbs, clean light fixtures, air vents and louvers. Perform semi-annual facility touch-up painting.  
• Coordinate with Fleet Services regarding servicing of assigned City vehicles and maintain cleanliness and care.
• Stay current with trends, practices, technology, and regulatory requirements related to aquatics, ice-rink operations, and facility maintenance.
• Maintain professional boundaries and constructive working relationships with all colleagues, seasonal staff, contractors, and the public.

Working Environment:
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Work requires physical and visual capabilities to operate passenger vehicles, trucks, and motorized equipment.  Work requires frequent light to moderate lifting/carrying (up to 50 pounds), occasional heavy lifting, walking and standing, exposure to sun, and use of both hands.  Work involves occasional pulling, pushing, reaching, use of fingers, crawling, bending/stooping, kneeling, twisting, squatting, and driving. Work includes occasional exposure to excessive intermittent noise, dust, fumes, smoke or gases, solvents, cleaning solutions, grease and oils, pesticides, or herbicides, and working around slippery or uneven walking surfaces, machinery, and moving vehicles. Frequently works alone and occasionally with others, uses constant verbal and written communication and frequently performs multiple concurrent tasks. 

This is a full-time position: 40 hours a week. Tuesday through Saturday work schedule, occasional overtime and flexible schedules may be required to fulfill organizational needs such as emergency mechanical repairs necessary to keep the City of Longmont aquatic and ice facilities open to the public.

Requirements

Qualifications:
Required: A minimum of two years of experience in the maintenance, repair and operation of pumps, motors, controllers, plumbing, and electrical systems. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Special Qualifications: Possession of a valid Colorado Driver’s license. Basic proficiency in Office Word and Excel software applications. Ability to work on-call, respond to call-backs, and work extended or flexible hours during emergencies and as operational needs require.

Desired:

• Two-year degree from an accredited college or technical school.
• Current certification in Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator certification, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire. 
• Current certification in ice-resurfacer training or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire
• Current ice rink maintenance certifications including but not limited to, BAR, IMEO, IMPT and SIRO, or ability to obtain one certification within 1 year of hire.
