The Mechanical Engineering Manager is responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing all mechanical engineering activities from product development through production. This role ensures that engineering projects, processes, and deliverables meet customer requirements and internal standards while providing leadership, technical guidance, and cross-functional support.
Essential Job Functions
Oversee mechanical engineering efforts from development through final delivery. Manage team workload and anticipate staffing needs. Conduct employee evaluations and provide performance guidance and recommendations. Collaborate with program management to establish cost and schedule targets. Develop and implement processes to improve efficiency and productivity. Support improvements in Product Data Management (PDM) and Configuration Management (CM). Participate in Change Control Boards (CCB). Assist with proposal development, quality assurance, procurement, and manufacturing activities. Provide regular status updates to senior leadership and program teams. Manage customer communications as required. Ensure designs meet customer requirements and industry standards. Evaluate product performance, reliability, and safety. Support development of production drawings and manufacturing documentation. Mentor engineers, technicians, and production staff. Collaborate with manufacturing teams to improve design and assembly processes. Assist with equipment and tooling selection and procurement. Safely handle equipment and materials and adhere to work schedule requirements, including overtime. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Experience managing diverse engineering teams. Strong knowledge of engineering development processes. Proficiency in AutoCAD and SolidWorks. Understanding of GD&T and applicable engineering standards. Knowledge of structural and hydraulic systems. Ability to manage multiple projects and communicate effectively across teams and stakeholders. Experience with PDM, PLM, and finite element analysis (FEA). Strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles such as mechanics, thermodynamics, and materials science. Familiarity with manufacturing processes including machining, fabrication, and welding. Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with a focus on innovation and quality. Eligibility to obtain required security clearance and ability to travel as needed. Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field preferred. Minimum of six (6) years of mechanical engineering design experience. At least three (3) years of management experience preferred. Manufacturing experience in machining, fabrication, welding, and assembly preferred. Experience with aircraft structural and hydraulic systems is a plus. Military or aviation maintenance experience is a plus. Familiarity with 3D scanning and 3D printing technologies is an advantage.
