Description
The Conservation Center in Chicago seeks an Objects Conservator to join our team. This role is responsible for the examination, documentation, and conservation of a wide range of artworks, including cultural heritage objects, decorative arts, archaeological and ethnographic items, and modern and contemporary art. This role offers the opportunity to work within a collaborative studio environment for a diverse clientele that includes museums, cultural institutions, and private collectors. This position will be filled at the Associate or Senior level depending on the candidate’s years of experience and qualifications.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong working knowledge of conservation materials, techniques, and ethics. Excellent hand skills, sound judgment, and the ability to carry out treatments ranging from minor to complex with precision and care are integral for this role.
This is a full-time exempt position. Regular work hours are Monday through Friday, 9 am–5 pm. Compensation is commensurate with experience. The salary range for Associate level is $55,000 - $65,000, and the range for Senior level is $68,000 - $78,000. Benefits include health, dental, vision, 401(k), paid leave, sick leave, and paid holidays. Occasional travel may be required.
Requirements
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Examine, document, and treat a wide range of objects in accordance with professional conservation standards and ethical guidelines.
- Perform conservation treatments on diverse materials, including but not limited to ceramics, glass, gilt wood, polychrome, ivory, leather, metal, plastics, and stone.
- Prepare detailed written condition reports, treatment proposals, and post-treatment documentation.
- Collaborate with other Conservation departments, Art Handlers, Registrars, and Client Services Representatives to ensure safe handling and successful outcomes.
- Maintain accurate project records and adhere to internal documentation systems and workflows.
- Participate in research initiatives and remain current on advances in gilding conservation techniques and materials.
- Support studio organization, equipment maintenance, and best practices for handling of conservation materials.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree in conservation with a specialization in objects, decorative arts, or a closely related field, or equivalent professional training and experience in the same areas of specialization, is required.
- Demonstrated ability to perform highly skilled conservation treatments across a variety of materials.
- Minimum of 5 years of post-graduation conservation experience for Associate level; 10+ years for Senior level.
- Excellent hand skills and a high level of craftsmanship.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly to clients and colleagues.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail.
- Experience working in a collaborative, fast-paced studio environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and project management software.
- Commitment to professional ethics and best practices in art conservation.
- Willingness to adapt and contribute to evolving studio needs and priorities.
