The Metal Detection/Gate Screener plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of Henry Maier Festival Park. This position performs thorough entry screening for attendees, employees, vendors, VIPs, artists, and authorized vehicles. Gate Screeners prevent prohibited items from entering the venue, support gate traffic operations, and uphold all venue security policies and procedures.Team members operate walk-through magnetometers, handheld wands, gate control devices, and vehicle-screening tools while maintaining a professional and welcoming guest experience. This position reports to the Gate Supervisor under the direction of the Gate Manager and works closely with Security personnel to maintain a safe and efficient entry process.
Metal Detection & Screening Operations Operate walk-through magnetometers and handheld metal detection devices. Conduct bag checks, visual inspections, and secondary screening when required. Interpret alarm indicators and identify potential concealed prohibited items. Ensure that firearms, weapons, or prohibited items do not enter the venue. Perform secondary screening on individuals who trigger alarms or cannot pass through metal detectors. Access Control & Gate Operations Control access to the venue and maintain safe and efficient guest flow through screening checkpoints. Conduct employee and vendor entry screening in accordance with established procedures. Process credentials for media, vendors, contractors, VIPs, artists, and guests at Gates 6, 13, and VIP entrances. Verify proper credential color, access zones, and expiration to prevent unauthorized entry. Vehicle Screening & Perimeter Security Perform vehicle inspections at designated gates including production docks, vendor gates, and delivery checkpoints. Inspect vehicle cargo areas, trunks, toolboxes, and equipment storage compartments as required. Verify manifests, delivery paperwork, driver identification, and company credentials prior to entry. Direct vehicle movement safely through screening lanes and maintain clear emergency access routes. Log vehicle entries including license plate, driver information, and purpose of visit. Immediately report suspicious vehicles, unauthorized access attempts, or discrepancies to Gate Supervisors or Security. Safety, Surveillance & Behavioral Awareness Observe guest and vehicle behavior for suspicious activity or indicators of risk. Maintain situational awareness at all times within and surrounding the gate area. Identify hazards, unsafe behaviors, and bypass attempts and escalate appropriately. Support emergency response procedures including evacuations and medical incidents. Professional Guest Interaction Greeting guests professionally and provide clear instructions during screening. Maintain courtesy, calmness, and composure when interacting with emotional, intoxicated, or disorderly individuals. Communicate venue policies respectfully while maintaining authority and adherence to security standards. Policy, Communication & Team Coordination Use two-way radio systems following proper communication protocol and gate terminology. Follow all written and verbal instructions issued by Gate Supervisors and Gate Manager. Adhere strictly to all security and screening protocols without deviation. Participate in all required training sessions prior to and during the event season. Physical Requirements Ability to stand for long periods, including extended time within screening lanes. Ability to lift, move, or adjust screening equipment, traffic cones, or barricades up to 25 lbs. Ability to bend, reach, walk, and work in narrow or crowded gate areas. Ability to operate handheld scanners, tablets, radios, and credential readers Must maintain a neat, clean, and well-groomed appearance at all times. Light/Medium Work: Lifting 30 pounds Maximum, with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous security, gate operations, or event screening experience preferred. Training or background in criminal justice or public safety is a plus. Ability to recognize behavioral indicators of suspicious intent. Ability to detect concealment attempts and identify prohibited items. Ability to operate magnetometers, handheld wands, and gate screening equipment. Ability to follow detailed screening procedures with accuracy and consistency. Strong communication and guest service skills. Ability to maintain professionalism in high-pressure and high-volume environments. Ability to produce clear and accurate incident notes when necessary. Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies or fast-changing situations.
