About Akropolis 

Celebrating its 15th season as “a sonically daring ensemble who specializes in performing new works with charisma and integrity” (BBC Music Magazine), the Akropolis Reed Quintet comprises five reed players and entrepreneurs unbounded by limits or categorization. Described by The Wire as a “collective voice driven by real excitement and a sense of adventure,” Akropolis has graced the Billboard Charts three times (2021, 2022, 2024) reaching as high as #2. Winner of seven national chamber music prizes including the 2014 Fischoff Gold Medal, Akropolis is known for performing “works that brilliantly exploit their unique instrumentation” (Gramophone). 

Akropolis is composed of the same five members that brought about its founding in 2009 and has premiered more than 150 new works. Akropolis highly values the continuity of its ensemble membership and a family-oriented culture of mutual growth and understanding among its ensemble, board, and staff.

Each year, Akropolis tours internationally, giving 30-40 concerts and over 80 educational events annually; in addition to producing a 14-event contemporary music festival in Detroit supported by 8 consecutive grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, among other supporters; a 5-day career development course; a 10-day chamber music institute in northern Michigan; and a school year length music composition residency at three Detroit high schools wherein Akropolis premiers and records ~15 works by Detroit youth each year.

Akropolis has released 6 full length albums and commissions a wide variety of composers from youth to luminaries like Augusta Read Thomas. Akropolis collaborates with numerous dynamic artists which in the past have included dancers of the New York City Ballet, the Dover Quartet, David Shifrin, soprano Shara Nova, multi-Grammy-winning trumpeter Kris Johnson, metal fabrication artist Juan Martinez, and many others.

About the Position

The Operations and Development Manager (ODM) position marks Akropolis’ first administrative hire and is directly tied to the nonprofit organization’s 3-year strategic plan of dramatic fiscal growth and increased artistic impact. The ODM’s role is to increase the organization’s capacity for financial growth, artistic productivity, and worldwide awareness. The position is divided into 50% Development and 50% Operational work. In year one, the ODM will be responsible for assisting the administrative team in meeting the organization’s match for a $75,000 challenge grant recently awarded by the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation. In years two and three, there is opportunity for growth into a full time position. 

This position is part-time and is fully remote, averaging 20 hours per week. Certain weeks will require more hours, and other weeks less, averaging to 20. Almost all work can be done at times of the ODM’s choosing throughout each week. Akropolis’ administrative base is Southeast Michigan, so if the selected candidate is based in Southeast Michigan, an opportunity to work in-person with the administrative team and artists will likely occur, but is not required or desired for the position. The ODM will report directly to the Executive Director (ED). The expected start date of this position is July 15, 2024, but could be arranged to be as early as July 1st. If required by the candidate, a start date later than July 15th can be discussed. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Development (Individual Giving, Grants, Sponsorship) 

    • Achieve the organization’s fundraising goals in collaboration with the administrative team and Board of Directors; this includes new major gifts, grants, sponsorship, cultivation of new funding opportunities, and oversight of all donations, aiming to increase $40,000 of annual giving to $100,000, and increase the total donors from 250 to 400. 

    • Build individual relationships with Akropolis’ existing donors and funders and ensure they are engaged and appreciated, and inspire them to continue or increase their support. 

    • Manage 2 major physical and electronic fundraising mailings each year, including the associated email solicitations, direct mail, annual report, event invitations, planned giving, etc.

    • Manage donor database and gift processing (about 200 entries per year), primarily during a spring and end-of-year campaign, with sporadic entries during the rest of the year. This includes migrating the current donor database (Insightly) to a more robust software (Little Green Light or Bloomerang).  

    • Pursue and facilitate strategic corporate partnerships and sponsorships with organizations in Southeast, MI, Petoskey, MI and beyond.

  • Operations (Finance, Booking, Tour Logistics, Programming, Community Engagement) 

    • Administratively support the organization’s artistic goals alongside the 5 quintet members and their booking agent Ariel Artists; this includes organizing all touring and travel logistics for ~30 touring engagements; cultivation of ~10 new performance opportunities, and maintaining presenter and audience relationships. 

    • Assist in producing, organizing, and promoting Akropolis’ self-produced initiatives: Together We Sound Festival, Akropolis Chamber Music Institute, Detroit High School Residency, Sheet Music Collection, and Akropolis Mastermind. 

    • Enter organization’s expenses and income into Quickbooks with oversight from ED.

    • Work alongside the Marketing Manager and PR agency Primo Artists to grow the prestige and visibility of Akropolis, including national press releases, regional press releases in association with tours, social media campaigns, album release logistics, and more. 

    • Assist with in-person concerts and events when applicable and available.

Ideal Qualifications

  • Passion and commitment to the mission, values, and long-term artistic growth of Akropolis.

  • 2-4 years of relevant professional experience in the performing arts industry and/or non-profit administration, including fundraising, grant writing, and operations. 

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently. A self-directed individual that takes action to influence outcomes and/or drive progress and positive change.

  • Comfort with online file sharing and other collaborative communication tools.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • An entrepreneurial mindset and approach to the arts industry and business-planning.

Compensation and Benefits

$32,000 annual salary paid evenly over 24 pay periods per year. Company 403(b) retirement plan provided (no match provided, but organizational growth may allow for it in the future). Flexible, remote working schedule. Position allows for and highly encourages a supple work-life balance and flexibility. The organization pays all travel expenses for all Akropolis employees when travel is necessary.
