Description
NATURE OF WORK:
Manual work of a responsible nature, requiring specialized skill in the operation of heavy and complex construction or maintenance equipment; related work as required. Work requires independent judgment and skilled operation of assigned equipment to avoid damage to public or private property or danger to public safety.
SUPERVISION:
Works under both general and direct supervision. May exercise occasional supervision over employees assisting on project to which the equipment unit assigned. May occasional assume the role of working foreman when one is not available.
JOB ENVIRONMENT:
Intermittent physical effort demanded under varying weather conditions. Performs heavy manual labor under extreme weather conditions. Works around underground utilities.

Requirements
Operates heavy and specialized construction or maintenance equipment such as motor grader, tractor mounted backhoes, front-end loaders, excavator’s, paving equipment, Vactor, Etc.
Services and follows prescribed maintenance procedures with respect to assigned equipment units.
Performs any and all the work ascribed to the Maintenance Craftsman but at a higher level with respect to individual tasks or with more overall ability and versatility; may act in leadsman capacity as well as participating in virtually any task of the department or agency to which assigned.
Assists in tapping water mains and cutting pipe with hydraulic cutter/tapping machines.
Performs masonry work at the journeyman level building catch basins, manholes, headwalls and retaining walls.
Operates less complex equipment when not operating the equipment unit to which regularly assigned; performs labor incidental to the work of operating assigned equipment or performs duties of Laborer or Maintenance Craftsman.
Regular and predictable attendance. Works a reasonable amount of emergency and/or scheduled overtime.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITY:
Knowledge: Demonstrated considerable knowledge of the mechanics of various types of equipment, along with proven skill in their operation.
Skills: Masonry work at the journeyman level and welding skills. Specialized skills in the operation of heavy and complex construction or maintenance equipment.
Ability: Ability to work effectively as part of a team and maintain cooperative working relationships, Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, drawings and technical specifications. Ability to exercise sound and problem-solving skills in the performance of assigned duties. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions accurately and efficiently. Ability to locate underground utilities and understand dig-safe markings.
