Mission
Waséyabek Federal Services, LLC (WFS) is a 100% Tribally owned, Native American SBA 8(a) small business of the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi (NHBP). WFS is part of a portfolio of companies managed by Waséyabek Development Company, LLC, a 100% Tribally owned economic development firm focused on income diversification on behalf of NHBP that reaches beyond gaming and is a well-funded, experienced small business, with substantial liquid assets and experience in federal contracting. WFS has borrowing capacity to meet the daily cash needs of new business development, new award support, and operational working capital. WFS is well-versed in federal contract compliance and provides outstanding support services
Position Summary
Waseyabek Federal Services, LLC (WFS) is staffing a Designer position in support of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory operated by Fermi Forward Discovery Group, LLC. The selected Designer will be embedded in the Design/Drafting Group within the Quality & Materials Department of Fermilab's Accelerator Physics & Superconducting Technology (APS-TD) Division, contributing directly to the mechanical design and drafting work that underpins some of the most consequential particle physics and accelerator programs in the world.
The Designer will work onsite under limited supervision, preparing mechanical designs and drawings using Siemens NX1980 and Teamcenter, and applying the ASME Y14.5-M-1994 (or higher) GD&T standard. Work will span an active portfolio including PIP-II, LCLS-II, LCLS-II HE, Accelerator Support, LHC AUP, SRF (Superconducting RF), and Superconducting Magnets.
This is a high-impact, deadline-driven engineering environment. The successful candidate will collaborate daily with Fermilab engineers to research design solutions, coordinate design development, and specify components and materials that meet exacting performance and quality standards.
Responsibilities:
• Prepare advanced-level 3D models and 2D mechanical drawings in NX1980 to support APS-TD projects, with all data managed within Teamcenter PLM.
• Correctly apply ASME Y14.5-M-1994 (or higher) Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) to all detail and assembly drawings.
• Perform design tolerance and stack-up calculations to verify fit, function, and assembly performance prior to fabrication.
• Develop layout designs, detail drawings, assemblies, and weldments in support of accelerator components, cryomodules, magnets, RF structures, beamline elements, and supporting hardware.
• Work directly with engineering staff to research and analyze design solutions, evaluate alternatives, and recommend components and materials appropriate to the operating environment (cryogenic, vacuum, radiation, magnetic).
• Apply Fermilab's QAM, APS-TD, and Design/Drafting procedures consistently across all work products, and submit deliverables for review, check, and approval by responsible Fermilab staff.
• Maintain configuration control, revision history, and drawing release status within Teamcenter, and ensure data integrity across the design lifecycle.
• Support engineering change processes, Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), and as-built documentation updates as required.
• Communicate clearly and professionally with engineering, quality, and project leadership; raise schedule, technical, or interface risks promptly.
Requirements:
• Demonstrated proficiency in Siemens NX1980 CAD — proficiency will be verified through a domain-specific technical interview conducted via Zoom by the customer prior to award/placement. This requirement is non-negotiable.
• Minimum 5 years of professional experience as a Designer in a mechanical design and drafting role.
• Working proficiency with Teamcenter or equivalent PLM/PDM environment for data management, revision control, and design release workflows.
• Strong working knowledge of ASME Y14.5-M-1994 (or higher) GD&T and the ability to correctly apply tolerancing schemes to complex assemblies.
• Demonstrated ability to deliver a quality work product on deadline-driven projects with multiple concurrent task assignments.
• Ability to perform tolerance stack-up analysis and translate engineering intent into manufacturable, inspectable designs.
• Strong written and verbal communication — able to interface directly with engineers, technicians, vendors, and project staff in a fast-paced research lab setting.
• On-site availability in Batavia, IL, 40 hours per week (MondayFriday between 7:00 AM and 4:30 PM Central).
• Physical requirements — ability to sit at a workstation for up to 8 hours per day and perform repetitive computer-based work.
• U.S. Person — able to obtain and maintain DOE site access for Fermilab.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Prior experience supporting national laboratory, DOE Office of Science, or large-scale scientific instrumentation programs (Fermilab, SLAC, ANL, ORNL, BNL, LBNL, JLab, etc.).
• Direct design experience with one or more of: superconducting RF cavities/cryomodules, superconducting magnets, particle accelerator beamline components, cryogenic systems, ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) hardware, or LHC/PIP-II/LCLS-II hardware.
• Familiarity with welded assemblies (AWS/ASME welding callouts), brazed joints, and machined precision components.
• Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) tool integration or coordination with stress/thermal analysts.
• Knowledge of materials selection for cryogenic, vacuum, and radiation environments (e.g., 316L/316LN stainless, OFE copper, niobium, titanium alloys).
• Experience with sheet metal, weldment, routing, and large-assembly modeling techniques in NX.
• Associate's degree or higher in Mechanical Design Technology, Drafting, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related discipline.
• Quality system familiarity (ISO 9001, ASME NQA-1, or equivalent QAM environments).
Location of Work:
Onsite at Fermilab (Batavia, IL) with possibility of remote work
8-hour shift between 7am 430pm CST
